LA COMPAGNIA TPO E IL TEATRO INTERATTIVO
Teatro visivo, emozionale, tattile, immersivo…

THE TPO COMPANY AND INTERACTIVE THEATRE
Visual, emotional, tactile, immersive... In TPO creation coincides with an interactive scenery. Using digital design all sets become “sensitive environments” continuous crossfades between art and play can be experienced. Dancers, performers and the audience share the stage and find a common ground of enjoyment beyond cultural and language barriers. Each artwork is designed to dialogue with players in motion, individual dancers or children. Images and sounds interface with the moving bodies on stage, transforming live gestures and virtual landscapes into a charming interactive art environment.

In TPO productions the role of performers achieves a special valence; thanks to the interactive effects the dancers on stage use their bodies in movement to “paint” and “play music” but, above all, they invite the audience children to explore the space with an approach to theatre that emphasises the use of the body and the gaze. The TPO Company’s work is directed by a versatile and tight-knit team composed of Davide Venturini, Francesco Gandi, (artistic direction), Rossano Monti, (engineering); Elsa Mersi (visual design); Spartaco Cortesi, Federica Camiciola, Francesco Fanciullacci (sound design); Livia Cortesi, Massimiliano Fierli, Matteo Caramelli, Niccolò Gallio, Francesco Frosini (console). On stage a team of dancers with international experience develops a constant aesthetic and expressive exploration in order to put the children in touch with contemporary dance.

Between 2002 and 2007, TPO collaborated with engineer Martin von Günten to conceive the "CCC [children's cheering carpet]", a large dance mat able to animate sounds and images through pressure sensors. A "magic carpet" which turns natural images/texture into an interactive environment. The CCC project became a trilogy focused on garden types (Japanese, Oriental and Italian). The success of this format brought TPO international renown.

From 2008 to 2009 the group adopted max_msp software as a creative and technical support for interactive theatre. In this research the group was able to capture the stage, with cameras, and link the performers or audience movement to the scene dynamics. The company then began developing software-controlled props that were designed to enrich and widen the theatrical effects. This is the origin of such emblematic choreographies and set designs as "Farfalle", "Barocco", both presented in Krokus Festival (Hasselt, Belgium) as well as “Saltbush”, (in collaboration with Insite_Art, Melbourne and Vertical Production Shanghai).

In 2010 the group focused its research on electronic music in order to create an interactive orchestra called "Play Please!" In this project the stage is divided into illuminated areas while glowing objects, controlled by sensors, act like virtual musical instruments. At the same time TPO began to produce multimedia installations for both children and adults.

In 2010 and 2011 the company created "Kindur, The Adventurous Life of Sheep in Iceland, a work that grew out of two site visits. The production, dedicated to the dramatic force of Nordic nature, called for three dancers to enact the epic tale of Icelandic sheep going from their winter pen to their summer pasture. Audience children, too, are directly involved and, by wearing a woolly heart with a digital light command, they are called on stage, a few at a time, to participate in this adventure.

The year 2013 saw the début of "Babayaga", a large-scale show based on French artist Rébecca Dautremer's illustrations of the Russian tale. In October of the same year, in collaboration with Marseille 2013 European Culture Capital, TPO presented "BLEU!" in Théâtre La Minuterie. This creation devoted to the sea is characterised by a stage set that envelops the audience in the transparencies of an enticing virtual aquarium.

Over the two year period 2014/15 the company based in Prato (Tuscany) adopted an abandoned area adjacent to their Teatro Fabbrichino headquarters where they planted an urban garden. In this area, suitable for outdoor shows, they inaugurated the first edition of "Ex Fabrica" summer festival. In November 2015, in co-production with the Théâtre National de Chaillot - Paris, TPO created the show "Pop Up Garden" inspired by the landscape designer and gardener Gilles Clement and by the idea that anyone can change one's self and the world tending gardens in the most unexpected places.

In 2016 the company undertook an investigation of China in a study ranging from the culture to the landscape of that huge country. This was the beginning of an important collaboration with Tong Production (Beijing) which funded the production of "Panda’s Home" and managed the very long tour across all of continental China. During the summer period TPO produced its first work for an adult audience, "Landskin”, where the bodies of two dancers act in symbiosis with real eucalyptus leaves and images of bark projected onto their skin… a unique performance of electronic land-art.

In 2017, the company won the prestigious Chinese SPAF award (Shanghai Performance Arts Festival “Going to the world”) for the show “Panda’s Home” and subsequently went on a long and demanding tour in the United Sates with the shows “Farfalle” and “Il Giardino Dipinto”. The company participated in important European festivals such as, Krokus Festival (Hasselt), Teatralia (Madrid), Horizon Dance Festival (Budapest) and Purple Festival (Berlin). It has also produced the second of the “trilogy”, for Ex Fabrica, “Cotone” to which it added the video artwork entitled EU_KA.

In 2018 the show "Panda's Home" was selected among the projects supported by the Siae "S'Illumina" competition. This show has been on a long tour in China and in the United States, where it made its debut at the New Victory Theatre in New York. In February a special version of “Panda's Home" was presented at the Philarmonie de Paris with the accompaniment of live music by the Chinese musician Serena Shan Yang Lin. During the Metastasio Ragazzi season the company presented the new show "TU" and during the summer it organized the 4th edition of the "Ex Fabrica" festival, in which it presented the third part of the "Botanical trilogy for Ex Fabrica" project entitled "Canapa". The new show "Colors" was presented at the Fabbricone theater.

In 2019/20 the company had the premiere at the BAM in Brooklyn (NYC) with “Colors” and carried out a long tour in China with Panda's Home show. In collaboration with the Korean National Dance Company (KNCDC) TPO created the visual set of “Rudolph” show presented at Seoul National Center for Dance. At the same time, TPO produced the 2019 and 2020 edition of Ex Fabrica festival debuting with the productions Pàthos Bàthos and Chrònos Kairòs. During these years, two new productions for children have been made, "Smart" and Anouk, successfully presented at various Italian festivals. As a result of the Covid 19 pandemic, the company has carried out specific projects for the lockdown: Zoom / Unprepared Hearts in collaboration with Sladovna Musum Pisek Czek Republic + UUUL Praha and the show Olga and Arturo broadcast in schools through IWBs. In addition, in the summer of 2020 the TPO a supported the artists of the company and financed the Art Community theater and dance project located in the context of Ex Fabrica Festival.

In 2021 with the persistence of the Covid_19 emergency, the company forcibly reduced its tours but despite everything the company carried out an intense activity in the regional territory. During the Christmas period, many “Olga and Arturo” show were represented online. In collaboration with Tong Playground (Bejing) was made the visual set fot the show “The Journey Concert Bloom or Wonderland. In collaboration with the Metastasio theater, the company created “Anguane Napee” and the “Art Community project” in the context of the Ex Fabrica Festival. The company participated with the Panda's Home show at Expo 2020 Dubai. During the season he participated in the Visioni d'infanzia Festival (Bologna) with Colors and in Contemporanea Festival with Anguane Napee. During the Metastasio Ragazzi season the company mede two productions: “Brutto Anatroccolo” and “Orecchio Curioso”.

In 2022/23 the company fully resumed its activity by overcoming the covid pandemic phase. During this period it co-produced with Teatro Metastasio the show "+ Erba”, which premiered at the Festival Les Elancès, (Corinillon Confoux (France) associated with the installation "The Concert of Trees" presented during the summer festival "Ex Fabrica”. For alternative spaces to theaters, two new shows "Ni Hao" and "The Jungle in the City" were produced, both setit in schools. In collaboration with Daniele del Bandecca and Sara Campinoti the company co-produced the dance show "Nome" presented at the festival "teatro tra le generazioni" Castelfiorentino. In collaboration with Versilia Danza it produced the show “Wonderland”. For the Ex Fabrica Festival 22 the company produced the show for adults "Pelle Madre" in co-production with the Metastasio theater. Regarding the international context, TPO produced the interactive installation "Melodia" commissioned by the Graz children's museum "Frida&Fred" and resumed touring activity in Europe participating with the show "Saltbush" at the Bibu Festival (Helsingorg, Sweden) and at the Ruutial Festival (Helsinki) with the show "Panda's Home." In April and May the show "Butterflies" toured extensively in the USA. In collaboration with Politeama Theater the company produced the touring show for high schools "Dorian Gray” - staged in 22 and 23 in Italian and English. Also in collaboration with the Politeama Theater, the company coordinated a mini-review of children's theater entitled "First at the Theater." During the 22/23 season, the company participated in the Eruopean project Elefsina European Capital of Culture by producing the show "EEE Elefsina".

New Victory Theater à New York.
